MAKING BLOGLAND BETTER

Since returning to blogland after a few years’ absence, it’s very clear that blogland is a much quieter place than it used to be. There are fewer bloggers, fewer blog posts, fewer comments on blog posts, fewer followers and visitors of blogs and, thankfully unless I’ve missed something, fewer blog wars.

I’ve just read two very insightful blog posts about the state of blogland. superbjversion2’s The Meandering Blogland River superbly compares blogland with the formation of oxbow lakes, which for some reason we were all taught about at school! smartasswoman’s Random Stuff smartly sees the decline of blogland as part of the decline of blogging generally amidst the growing popularity of other forms of social media, such as Instagram, TikTok and Twitter.

The site clearly hasn’t helped blogland with its many glitches, though I suspect these glitches don’t fully explain why blogland has gotten much quieter. But if the site rolls out its new format again - merging blogs and groups, streaming posts selected by an algorithm to each member and discarding blogland’s homepage - then this would just destroy all sense of community in blogland.

The site has no reason to make blogland a better place as blogging can’t be monetised easily. The site makes its money elsewhere.

It goes without saying that we all blog for slightly different reasons. I like blogging because I feel part of a wider community; I’ve made some great online friends here; I’ve found out things that I wouldn’t have known about; I’ve enjoyed the freedom of expressing myself without the normal constraints of offline conversations; and I like writing and reading about sex!

Though blogland may be in terminal decline, and I hope it’s not, it may be ways of arresting its decline and making blogland a more animated, lively and vibrant place.

Blogland is great for standard members as they can blog freely and communicate with all other members. By the same token, blogland is great for gold members because they can communicate with standard as well as gold members.

Blogland is great for new members as they can get know other members. I’ve noticed that many new blogs are created every day but seemingly very few of these blogs become established and popular. Blogland’s homepage focuses largely on established and popular blogs, which to an extent fosters competition amongst the top blogs.

How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with blogland?
What can this site do to make blogland better?
What can bloggers do to make blogland better?

For what it’s worth, and others may have very different ideas, I think bloggers, individually and collectively, need to try and cultivate a greater sense of community. Below are just a few examples of how a sense of community has been or can be promoted in blogland.

Every week a few bloggers, via the HNW Bloggers’s group moderated by JN63JPN, celebrate Half Nekkid Wednesday, though I must confess that I always cheat with my contributions.

There used be a virtual symposium, initiated by humorlife and continued by pocogato12, where every month many bloggers would post a contribution on a selected topic, but unfortunately this symposium fizzled out.

Also there used be annual blog awards. Bloggers would vote for the best blog, funniest blog, sexiest blog, etc. Unfortunately, there was no award for the blogger with the best cock in Nottingham!

Before I joined blogland, I think there was a mentoring scheme in which established bloggers would help new bloggers to get going in blogland.

Some bloggers, through their posts, instil a sense of community. For example, there's citizen4722’s tricky music quizzes every Sunday and there's Tmptrzz’s weekly NFL Picks Contest - the 49ers are going win the Super Bowl this season!

Many bloggers are very good at commenting on other bloggers’ posts and at replying to comments on their blogs. Blogging works with interaction between bloggers; it’s all about relationships. There’s little point writing a blog if no one is reading and commenting on it.

I’ll stop now as I’ve gone on too much!

This post is not a rant harking back to a golden age of blogland. Blogland changes over time, for better or worse depending on your point of view.

First off let me say Thank You for giving a shout out to all the wonderful Bloggers that you have mentioned in your blog today. And a personal Thank You from myself, letting bloggers know about my Weekly NFL Contest. It is my way of giving back to members here for being such great watchers, and especially those standard members who need points to navigate the site.

Secondly let me just say that Humorlife's Symposium had been taken over by Pocogato12 and she tried to keep it going to no avail. But unfortunately it just seemed to go by the wayside like many things do here.

How satisfied or dissatisfied are you with blogland?

You know I always tell members the site is what we make of it, and I believe that
fits well with blog land as well..

What can this site do to make blogland better?

I think the site can fix all the underlying issues they cause when they make
changes that they think are better when in fact all it does is cause more issues
that has driven many bloggers away. Like pictures disappearing, numbers, letters,, words missing from our blogs making us having to check back often and fix said issues.

What can bloggers do to make blogland better?

I think bloggers can make it better by not attacking other bloggers and causing DRAMA. There has been so many bloggers banned by the site because they kept stirring up
trouble. There are still these issues today, but it has gotten better and there has been less drama lately ( knock on wood ). Just have fun blogging and don't let others get to
you. Just blog about what makes you happy, as the definition of blogging is posting, stories, pictures, just all sorts of different things.

There is one more thing I would like to mention is when you leave a comment on someones blog it should be respectful and if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. I know we all have our thoughts and opinions on things but there is a way you can say things without being disrespectful.

Seduce the mind and see what a wonderful adventure the body will take you on..

Good post spunky. I agree that the blogs are an excellent way for standard members to make themselves seen and get to know other members (although, I will say I have only ever met one or two fellow bloggers who lived within even 250 miles of me, so it's not necessarily a good way to find a love or sex connection).

One thing that might revive the blogs a bit would be for them to be included on the mobile application (which I suspect is what most members use these days) and maybe to have a couple of interesting posts featured on the home page each week.

Of course we all have our own ideas of what makes a post interesting, but in my view it's not porn pictures stolen off the internet.

1. It is what it is, the level of satisfaction and complaints thereto will make no difference.
2. Remove the glitches, promote the community better, treat all bloggers equitably.
3. I've advocated some form of community control in the past, yep, that went down like a wet fart.

Sadly, nothing we say or do will make one iota of difference if the site makes no money from the community. And fair enough. If you were setting up a blogging community would you do it for free and expect the community members to contribute nothing besides a lot more work for you?

I hate to say it, because I will miss it terribly, but blogland will likely cease to exist in the foreseeable future, and for a variety of different reasons. Its inexorable spiral to the bottom is nearing the nadir.

Cheery chat for a Monday, what!?!

Hope you're well otherwise McPunky.

I too have been away for a few years, and yes, it is different than before, but I suspect it is the nature of the place. Of all those blogs I used to follow, most are dormant, and those who used to follow my blog seem to have gone away as well.

Myself, after actively blogging here for a number of years, I reached a point where I had said everything I had, and found that I was repeating myself.....though there is always a new audience coming along.

Some might say, "It is what it is"......though that phrase sucks.....

There are many things that could make a blogger leave. Frustration with glitches. Finding the relationship you want. Personal issues in the real world. Or simply running out of things to say.

But, to continue with the oxbow lake analogy .... just because our waters are evaporating doesn't mean the waters left behind need to stagnate. Interaction between reader and writer is key. I've abandoned some watched blogs simply because the person never responded to comments.

Making an effort to reach out to new bloggers would help ... maybe.
If I knew how to make bling, perhaps a blog olympics ... that's how I broke out of obscurity.
Now that the missing word glitch might be over (or at least not as bad) perhaps resuming the Virtual Symposium or something similar.

Opportunity may knock only once, but temptation bangs on the door forever!

While I agree with the majority of your post, Spunky, I do have an opinion on parts of it. I agree since the site can't monetize blogland, they don't put any resources towards it. I myself can't understand how something that should be neglected still manages to get tampered with and then stops working properly.

The site is a dating/sex site. It is what it is. It is NOT Facebook or some other social media site.

I chose to blog to highlight or 'sell' myself to the local ladies as a way of introduction or insight as to who I am/was, and what I was seeking from potential members. I found that I could 'advertise' myself in a way that my main profile could not. Also, in the past, Standard members had more access to the profiles even though they were not full/paid members. This privilege was slowly taken away, bit by bit, by the site over the years to now where it is non-existent.

So I always looked at blogging as an extension of my main profile. Just my two cents....

My posts have declined mainly because of the glitches that site refuses to fix.
$$$$ is another factor for something not working!
I don't subscribe to the other medias you mentioned

Cyber Dating Online is a sex and dating site, while FB I understand is also used for finding dates
A blog, a poll is very helpful to find out if a guy is only into SEX or if he actually would like more, by visiting your blog or poll and understand your needs much better.
It takes some time, it helps to eliminate empty miles though

Some of the bloggers have stated in the past that they use the site only to blog so perhaps there is an incentive for Various to fix the blog problems if it means retained numbers (bloggers and followers). However I suspect the number is very small meaning there will be no return on investment.

I'd much rather see quality than quantity. There are members who still see the blogs as a popularity contest and must post their one or two blogs every day in order to stay at the top of the list. But is it quality? Questionable.

And we all know about the ones who bulk post every day - they just get ignored.

The Cyber Dating Online site is going downhill, I suspect along with all the other associated sites as well as numbers continue to decline and the population continues to age. It wont be here for ever and I'd be very surprised if it lasts another five years.

That's not saying the site can't improve things - the missing words on blog posts is particularly annoying. I've edited this post about five times to replace the missing words - they always seem to be little words that go missing - and I've now noticed that words are still missing!

Like I mentioned to BJ, I'm in it to make real world friendships from the blogs. It's where the smart, interesting, funny people are and with the way I travel, it's been a fabulous decade of meeting folks from all over the country. I do agree with you that because there's no way of monetizing the blogs, there's no way the site is going to promote them in any way. If they do, then say goodbye to any content worth reading. I think the site could make things better by finally fixing the first comment glitch as well as the lack of mobile access. Sadly, I DO check out the new blogs and the majority of new blogs seem to be just for grift, not for actual content, so I'm not sure if improved access and timely postings would even make a difference.

I agree a lot of new blogs are devoid of content though a few do have things to say. Because of the limited lenght of the recent posts' list and because of the hogger-bloggers who post any times in one go, there's no space for anyone's and especially a new blogger's new post to appear on the recent posts' list.
The site should sort out the many glitches.

I've been silent lately mainly because of the pandemic. Sheltering in place was no fun, and it messed up with my mind more than I expected it to.

I hope things pick up for you. I miss your blog.

As a newbie to the blog-o-sphere I see the concerns that you describe in your post. Even if one can not monetize these blogs (but I think you could with the most popular ones). The blogs do provide added value to the members and as such should be supported fully & included in the mobile site. As I see it, there is much potential in keeping bloggers active because it makes the full experience of A.fF come alive. There are all types of people in this app and the programmers will financially do well by addressing all the needs of it's members. Otherwise they will go elsewhere ... and whatever gets left of aF.f will be of very little use to the few who remain.

If you wish to contact me, I've setup a private Mailbox Private message Area WHAT39S IN THE VAULT STAYS IN THE VAULT in my Blog. CarpeJamie

It's great to hear a 'newbie' perspective. Often it's the 'oldies' who chart the decline of blogland.
The site definitely needs to address its audience who access it via mobile. The site is running on quite old codes, hence the glitches.
It's refreshing to hear a generally postive view of the site. Though an 'oldie', sometimes when things change, the 'oldies' like to blame the site. I think to a large extent blogland is what we as bloggers make of it.

I also just returned after 12 years of absence, and I'm still trying to figure out what has changed in blogland.

Welcome back.
I think you'll find it much quieter. There are even male bloggers in the top bloggers list largely because a lot of female bloggers have left.
Thanks for stopping by.
